Seventeen

I lag a good distance behind Gauge during the dash back to the Neu Vu Condominiums. Trying to recollect what I’ve learned about my father is a serious strain on my mind. Some things just don’t add up, like the fact that my father deliberately brought the Davids brothers into Sheridan when they were young. Why would he do that if his loyalty belonged to the Miles County government?

Many of the points I try to raise in the captain’s defense, however, lack depth. He rode into Miles County with a band of seeksmen to attempt to rescue Evvie from their grips. However, only one side of the line of soldiers was fired upon. While some had injuries that claimed their lives, my father came out unscathed. Did Jerus raise his hands to signal his own presence, or was the signal meant to indicate which bike had Commander Harter aboard? My stomach twists with how easily I can raise contradictions to his good character.

I push thoughts of my father out of my mind. After all, there are immediate dangers that I should be focusing on.

Gauge doesn’t bother to wait for me at the entrance to the condominiums ahead. I accelerate my pace, but the glass door closes just before I nearly collide with the building.

“Another charge to 407?” the front desk guard grumbles through the speaker outside.

“No. I’ll wait,” I answer. He should be back down with the two families soon.

The guard slouches in his chair and pulls one ankle across to the opposite knee. He slides his tablet onto his lap, and returns to whatever brainless activity he had been conducting on it before our return interrupted him.

It’s cool outside, but the air is refreshing. I walk a few feet from the glass doors and lean against the building to rest. With deep breaths, I relax my body, but my mind and my senses are as alert as ever. One helicopter’s spotlight search comes too close for comfort. I ought to go inside after all.

Strangely, the guard is already standing when I tap the bell icon on the screen beside the doors. When he turns in my direction, wide-eyed, I see what has sprung the lazy man to his feet. Gauge’s face fills the media screen behind him. The county has issued an escaped felon warning, though Gauge Gallagher is not the name listed below his picture.

“Don’t move,” the guard yells from inside. Clearly, he’s matched the picture to the young man who he just readmitted into room 407, the same room that Rhoma, Monya, and I requested entrance into when we first arrived. He knows we’re from the same party.

My first instinct is to scream Gauge’s name to warn him that something is wrong, but I change my mind as the guard fumbles to pull his gun on me. The guard doesn’t realize how easily the agents will be able to catch us if he calls them to give up our whereabouts. All he needs to do is tap a few buttons on his tablet to alert the police, who will inform their secret superiors.
